Lab dei Bulbi
September 2021 - July 2022 Flavia Vilkama,Juana Joceline Acevedo Hülsbusch,Yoyo DellIn our concept we drew parallels with one of the "most important" activities in Abruzzo: the cultivation of saffron. The work with saffron needs a permanent structure, a Lab and many small temporary bulbs, bulbis in italian that can be found only part of the year in the fields of Caporciano. The bulbs go through active, transient and dormant phases. Our project functions in a similar way.
Our permanent building, the Lab is located on Via del Carmine and the bulbi spread like a net over the neighborhood. The locations of the Lab and the bulbi are an interplay of something new coming to Caporciano, linked to already existing structures, ruins and places that are not used. In this way, our project merges with and extends the architectural heritage of Caporciano.
The Lab is located on Via del Carmine, one of the prominent staircases connecting the old upper village and new lower village. Both the wide-open view of the valley and the plateau-like levels contribute to the spacious quality of this site, a feeling contrary to Caporciano's tangled center. The Lab on the street Via del Carmine unites two ruins. One is intended as a spot where people can meet to work remotely. Next to these luminous and open spaces there will also be a variety of workshops. The other one serves as a house for the community, staffed with a kitchen and public bathrooms. It can be used for public events in Caporciano. It is important to us that the Lab could becomes a place of exchange and togetherness.
